Agriculture is the largest water user worldwide, accounting for 70 percent of total freshwater withdrawals on average. Of that 70% used by farmers, 40% is lost to the environment due to poor irrigation systems, evaporation, and overall poor water management. In many regions of the world, water is becoming increasingly scarce due a combination of factors, including population growth, urbanization and climate change. Also, drought is a common problem in arid areas, and can cause crop failure, reduce yields and increase the risk of wildfires. Considering the circumstances of the global energy crisis and water insufficiency, there is a need for more sustainable and efficient water management practices such as smart irrigation, to conserve water, improve agricultural productivity, and protect the environment.

This IoT As a Service (IOTaaS) solution enables the farmer to remotely control the irrigation. The farmer can control irrigation (turn on/off watering or set/change a watering schedule) from any part of the world, without ever stepping foot in the field, which saves time and money. Likewise, the farmer can set conditions to be notified for those cases requiring special attention.

This service can also work in combination with the Soil Moisture, Temperature and EC Monitoring Solution to determine how much water is needed and when to water, so the right amount of water is applied at the right time. Additionally, weather forecasts are considered to adjust watering schedules accordingly, avoiding watering when a rainstorm is predicted.

Using Smart Irrigation in conjunction with Precision Agriculture techniques, farmers can improve crop yields and reduce water waste, determine which areas of a field need more or less water, and apply the right amount of water in the right place at the right time.
